Mission:
A Silence of Friends
Location: First Officer's Quarters
"Lieutenant, Captain D'Sai isn't responding to hails." The crewman on duty, a spray of freckles across his nose and a shock of strawberry blonde hair that literally defied attempts to tame it, caught the Chief of Security's gaze and swallowed reflexively. He was new to the duty, fielding calls and making sure that everyone that need to know did. "The Bridge is asking that someone go to her quarters and check."
Daegan was reviewing the newest duty roster and assignments that had been worked up as the crewman relayed the message. Handing the padd back as he turned, "I'll handle it."
He quickly made his way to the XO's quarters, but while on his way he recalled the staff meeting and the Doctor's warning. After all, D'Sai had been on the away team. Reach the door there was no response to repeated chimes, even an old school know on the door. "Computer override the lock on the Commander's quarters, authorization..." Again the Doctor's warning sounded as he trailed off.
"Authorization not received."
"Computer scan Commander D'Sai's lifesigns and report."
"Commander D'Sai is in her quarters. Lifesigns are readable but faint," the computer responded.
"Baas to Sickbay. Medical emergency at Commander D'Sai's quarters!"
"Understood, Lieutenant. I'm on my way."
Dr. Patrick Ryan snapped his tricorder shut and grabbed his medkit from the side table, slinging it over his shoulder in one smooth motion. As he stepped into the corridor, he called back to his staff, "Prep biobed two and alert isolation. We may have another case."
The corridors blurred past as he made his way quickly toward the executive officer’s quarters. His mind was already cycling through worst-case scenarios. D'Sai had been on the away team. He had warned them this might happen.
When he reached the door, he turned to the control panel. "Computer, override door lock to Commander D'Sai’s quarters. Medical authorization: Ryan-Delta-Seven-Niner."
"Authorization accepted."
The door slid open with a hiss, revealing the dimly lit quarters within. The room was quiet, too quiet. Patrick moved quickly inside, tricorder in hand, already scanning. D'Sai lay slumped on the couch, her breathing shallow, her skin pale with a faint sheen of sweat.
"I've got her," Patrick said as he knelt beside her. The tricorder's readings confirmed what he feared—deteriorating neural activity, matching the others. "We need to get her to sickbay. Now."
It had been too late to stop the doctor from opening the door. If there was some kind of contaminant it was out now. "Can she be transported?!"
Patrick didn’t look up, his eyes locked on the tricorder screen. “Barely—but if we wait, we lose her.” He adjusted the settings on the device, fingers moving with precision. “Initiate emergency transport, biofilters on maximum. Alert isolation—Category Four containment.”
He finally glanced toward the Lieutenant, his expression grim. “We’ll deal with exposure protocols after. Right now, she’s still alive. Let’s keep it that way.”
He tapped his combadge again. “Ryan to Sickbay—lock onto my signal and transport both of us directly to Isolation. She’s crashing.”
"Daegan, notify the Captain immediately." Patrick said as he transported to sickbay.
Daegan watched as they beamed away. "Computer seal this section. bio-hazard protocol!" Once he received confirmation on the seal, he tapped his commbadge, no doubt console on the bridge had alerted then to the seal. "Baas to Captain Gray. Medical emergency. Commander D'Sai has been beamed to sickbay, and I have sealed the area around he quarters as a precaution."
"Understood," Rylan said. "On my way." He closed the connection and rose smoothly to his feet. "I'll be in Sickbay."
