Mission:
A Silence of Friends
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: MD001 - 1215 hours
Abandoning her belongings in her newly assigned quarters, Lieutenant Trynn had debated over whether to eat first or just start on the ‘to do’ list she had prepared on the journey to the starbase. Joining a crew came with certain formalities and it was usually best to deal with them quickly. Now that she had officially reported aboard and met the captain, the next main item was to meet with the ship’s Chief Medical Officer.
Between them they would be responsible for the physical and psychological wellbeing of the crew. Out of the entire crew, Doctor Patrick Ryan would be someone she would work closely with.
Entering sickbay she found it quiet, although a noise caught her attention and made her gravitate towards a small annex. “Doctor?” She called out as she approached.
Pat looked up from his paperwork. "Doctor Ryan, and in here." he said standing up from his desk. He had been doing charts from the last patient he had who somehow managed to sprain his knee while running in the holodeck from a werewolf he had created.
“Good afternoon,” Ayryn offered with a bright smile and a wave as she reached his office. “Dr Ayren Trynn, Chief Counselor. Is now a good time? I can come back..? I hate to get between anyone and their paperwork.”
"No no come in. Paperwork will always be there. And call me Doc." he said reaching out his hand for a shake. "Pleasure to meet you Counselor. Welcome aboard."
“And you,” she agreed with a brief handshake. “And thank you. I’m still learning my way around but, given our roles on the ship, I thought it important we meet as soon as possible. I too am happy to procrastinate when it comes to paperwork.”
"I agree. Why don't you tell me a bit about yourself. " He said motioning for her to take a seat by his desk.
Taking the offered seat she paused, considering. “Quite an open question,” she grinned, “I suppose I should start with the basics. I earned my M.D. but, obviously, specialising in psychiatry. Since graduating I’ve had various postings, but also taken time out to recharge and do some research. This is my first assignment in a little over six months so wearing the uniform again is taking a little getting used to.
Aside from that, I should probably make you aware I’m half Vulcan,” she added,”on my father’s side. My mother was El-Aurian. As far as I’m aware there aren’t too many like me in Starfleet so only fair to give you a heads up. I brought a copy of my medical file, just in case it was needed.”
"I can input it into the system though I'm pretty sure it should be there already. The uniform does take a but of getting used to. But it's a wonderful thing. " Patrick said. "I've been practicing for a while. I worked in many trauma units and emergency situations before heading to a ship. It's something I've always loved doing and I'm glad to be doing it. I've met a few people here so far and it's a great place."
“I am looking forward to it,” she smiled, “and getting to know everyone. So far I’ve only really met the Captain, XO, Commander Knox and now you but I’m sure that will change quickly enough. I commend your work. I vividly remember my trauma medicine rotation and think that is where I absolutely decided psychiatry was my preference. It is good to know the crew is in capable hands, Doctor.”
"I'm sure of that between the two of us." Pat smiled. "Hopefully they won't need either of us that often, though I have learned there is a particular ensign who likes to create interesting scenarioes in the holodeck and he keeps getting hurt. At least it gives me hands on experience while working on paperwork and getting things up to speed."
“That sounds like someone I should probably meet,” she concluded. “Not that I want to stifle creativity. But at least he is giving you an excuse to take a break from paperwork. Sadly it is a universal constant no matter where Starfleet sends you.”
Pat nodded. "If I didn't get paperwork to do, I probably would be bored. It's also how I keep up on the latest and greatest. Going through what other doctors have done. Things I would have done differently. Things I didn't think about."
“Perhaps we need to find you some hobbies if paperwork is looking like a good thing to you,” she teased. It was rare to encounter anyone who actually seemed to welcome the administrative mountain which accompanied their work. And when you were department head, that burden multiplied considerably.
Patrick laughed. "I do have hobbies. A few various ones. But I moreso like being up to date to help my patients"
“And I one hundred percent appreciate that, although I hope to not be a patient or need your expertise,” she confided.
"Agreed. Well Counselor can you think of anything else or anything you might need from me at the moment?" Pat said
“Nothing right now, but I know where to find you if I need to. And obviously my door is always open, even if it is just to have a break. With all the best will in the world you have a difficult, stressful job. I’m always there if you need me.”
"Thank you Counselor. Appreciate it." Pat said.
“Anytime,” Ayryn replied as she stood and headed out, “have a lovely day,”
